Women’s Tournaments Summer 2008

There were a number of tournaments that Stamford women participated in over the summer.  Congratulations to all the winners and a special thank you to all who participated.

Queen of the Catskills Tournament

The Queen of the Catskills Tournament was held July 26, 2008.  This was the best tournament ever!  A full field of seventy-two women (36 teams) from numerous clubs in the area played a two woman scramble format.  The weather was spectacular and all seemed to enjoy the day.  A special thank you to outgoing chair, Frances Archibald.  She has been the inspiration behind the tournament, helped develop the concept along with co-chair Yolanda Trappenburg. They assembled a first rate committee to make it all work.  Fortunately Yolanda has agreed to continue to chair the Tournament committee next year and the committee has agreed to continue as well.

Hold This Date: July 25,2009 For The 2009 Queen of the Catskills

The Queen of the Catskills Tournament will be held on Saturday July 25, 2009 this year, so try to keep that date open.  The 2009 flyers/applications can be downloaded in Word or PDF formats by Clicking Here or opened and  printed by Clicking Here

Inter-County Golf League 2008

Thirteen Stamford women members participated over the summer in the Inter-County Golf League.  Everyone seemed to agree it was a very positive experience and enjoyed car pooling to other clubs which brought a sense of camaraderie to the group.  Stamford members participating were:  Frances Archibald, Ruth Baker, Helen Gorlach, Beverly Hartwell, Joyce Jaret, Lucy Jessen, Vicki Joshpe, Claudia Lawrence, Ricki O’Donnell, JoAnn Rockefeller, Mary Sherwood, Jackie Swenson and Carol Wyberanec.

Inter-County League is an individual competition.  The only requirement for playing in the Championship Round is to play at two other competitions.  Member clubs are Stamford, Cobleskill, Sacandaga, Canajoharie, Newport and Nick Stoner.  Over the summer, all thirteen women won prizes at the various tournaments with a total for Stamford of $232.50, the highest amount for any other club.  This amount is sent by check to our Pro Shop and disbursed to the individual winners.  Results for the Championship is awarded separately.

This year the championship was held at Nick Stoner  with the following results for Stamford:  B Flight 1st Low Gross-Beverly Hartwell $40; C Flight 4th Low Gross-Helen Gorlach $8; D Flight Low Gross- Frances Archibald $10.

At the Fall 2008 Inter-County meeting, Stamford Golf Club was selected to host the 2009 Championship Tournament.  Frances Archibald was elected President of the IC League with Carol Wyberanec elected as Secretary.  JoAnn Rockefeller will be Stamford’s League Representative.  Look for information and dates of tournaments for the 2009 season on the bulletin board in the Women’s Locker Room.  Deadline to declare interest and pay $5.00 dues is June 1, 2009.

Two-Women Better Ball

Twenty-four Stamford women members turned out for a lovely day of golf on Sunday, September 7, 2008.  The afternoon started with a brunch courtesy of SWGA.  A special thanks to Mary Sherwood.  She did a great job and has ably chaired this event for over 15 years. Mary will retire from these duties next year but fortunately Carol Wyberanec, who co-chaired the event this year, has agreed to Chair the Two-woman better ball next year.

A beautiful tree was planted in memory of Julie Ackerman off the 17th tee with a lovely plaque and stand next to the tree.  Thanks to Joyce and Randy Jaret for picking up the tree that Mike and the grounds crew planted.  Also to John Wyberanec for making the beautiful plaque stand. Thanks also to Randy Jaret for his work on the Memorial Garden; to Ted Archibald and Charlie Palm for rebuilding the stone wall; to Yolanda and Kees Trappenburg for tending the flowers on the porch;  to all the women who adopted a tee box. to help beautify the course; and to the bulletin board committee for improving the women’s locker room (and outside).   Kudos go as well to all the Stamford men who helped out at the Queen of the Catskills Tournament and  a special thanks to Charlie Palm for grooming the course sand traps.
